Abundance of nature in Baganga

Posted by ADMINISTRADORES

With the long coastline, fishing is a major and alternative source of livelihood to coconut farming. Baganga can boast lobster, clam, and a variety of other seafood. Bagangeños mostly live off the abundance of nature—coconut, logging, and marine resources. Few other business opportunities are available this far from the city. The effects of El Niño have been limited. I experienced lots of rain and not a single brownout during my three days in the town, and this at a time when six-hour brownouts and drought are haunting most of Mindanao.

Election posters are pasted or nailed on the coconut trees along the roads. This is a violation of the law—posters are supposed to be placed in common poster areas only. However, how else will people know who are the candidates? Hopefully the candidates and their supporters will remove the posters after election day so that the posters won’t turn into litter polluting an otherwise clean town. The beaches are clean—I didn’t see plastics, cigarette buts, wrappers or other types of garbage on the beaches that I visited. A few empty Tanduay bottles on the isolated beach at the mouth of the Langoyon River were all the trash that I saw. Somebody must have gone to this remote place to drown his heartache.

Baganga, by the way, has lakes too, ideal for people who like to swim but don’t like the big waves of the sea.

NPA makes hinterlands risky For Baganga

Posted by ADMINISTRADORES

The visitor will be amazed by the beauty of Baganga, especially at this time when other parts of the country have turned dry, brown and dusty. Baganga remains green and lush. The white-topped waves of the Pacific Ocean keep washing up on the shore. In this environment on a lazy Sunday, a taste of the local version of puto and the crispy skin of lechon makes life seem perfect and trouble free. But venturing into the hinterlands where cutting of rattan and logging compete with coconut farming as the main source of livelihood is risky unless one is a friend of the NPA.

Passing through Mati City on my way back to Davao City, I learned that members of the NPA have come down from the mountains to campaign for Satur Ocampo, Liza Maza and Sen. Manny Villar. The people who are responsible for making Trisha Faith fatherless at the age of nine months have temporarily replaced their firearms with campaign posters. Sen. Villar, whom I was delighted to personally serve coffee when he guested the radio station where I worked and who staked his House speakership to have the Clean Air Act passed, must explain to Trisha Faith, her mother, the parents and siblings of the late PFC Dedumo why he is collaborating with the killers of their loved one. Dedumo was a soldier in the service of his country and he died defending this country and the office for which Sen. Villar is aspiring.

6 soldiers killed in Mahan-ob, Baganga

Posted by ADMINISTRADORES

Municipality Of Baganga, Philippines—At least six soldiers were killed in a New People’s Army attack in a hinterland village in Baganga, Davao Oriental on Saturday morning, a communist rebel leader said. The attack came as the NPA was about to celebrate its 41st anniversary on Monday.

Mr. Dyomabuk Kadyawan, spokesperson of the Antonio Nerio Antao Command of the NPA’s Front 15, said the soldiers who belong to the 67th Infantry Battalion were resting in Sitio (sub-village) Pagbabayan, Barangay (village) Mahan-ob at past 7 a.m. when attacked was launched.

Kadyawan said his men monitored the entry of the soldiers in the village at 2 a.m., prompting them to conduct the offensive.

“The guerilla action is a slap on the enemy's face who just recently declared that Baganga in Davao Oriental is said to be a NPA-free Municipality,” the spokesperson said on his most recent conference.

However, Lieutenant Colonel Randolph Cabangbang, spokesman of the Eastern Mindanao Command, said not six but only one soldier died in the attack. He also said that another soldier was wounded. The identities of the soldiers were still unknown until tis very moment of time.

PAO Reopens Davao Oriental district office

Posted by ADMINISTRADORES

Jan. 14 — The Public Attorneys Office (PAO) in Davao Region finally reopened its Baganga District Office with the appointment of one lawyer last Monday.

PAO Davao chief Francis Calatrava assigned in Baganga lawyer Apple Cherrie Amolata, who will be handling the Regional Trial Court (RTC) and the Municipal Trial Court (MTC) in Baganga, the Municipal Circuit Trial Courts (MCTC) in Cateel and Boston, Manay, Taragona and Caraga.

"Daghan kaayo siya ug courts (She has to handle so many courts) but I am so happy that we now have our office in Baganga which was closed since August 2004, for almost six years," Calatrava said.

Calatrava said Davao Oriental Governor Corazon Malanyaon was instrumental in the reopening of the district office.

"In Davao City alone, we have 15 lawyers for 18 courts. But, I'm prohibited from handling a court because I have to supervise and oversee the lawyers and the staff all over the region," Calatrava explained. (PNA) FFC/JLC/lvp

Meanwhile, Calatrava said the PAO Davao still needs additional lawyers for assignments in Digos and Malita in Davao del Sur; and Tagum and Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del Norte.

LANGUAGE OF BAGANGA

Posted by ADMINISTRADORES

Baganga as part of the davao oriental Region uses the Southern Kamayo dialect. The Southern Kamayo is quite different from the Kamayo Dialect of Bislig Surigao Del Sur. Southern Kamayo is also spoken in Southern Lingig, Surigao del Sur; and in Cateel, Baganga, Caraga and some parts of Davao Oriental. It is also related to Surigaonon and Butuanon. Dialect variations are caused by mixed dialect communications between the Mandaya, Cebuano and other immigrants now living in the area. A prefix is added in most adjectives. Example: The word GAMAY in Cebuano (English: SMALL) is GAMAYAY in Baganga. But you cant use the AY prefix often, like for instance the word DAKO (English; BIG)is spoken as Bagas-AY or bagasay instead of saying DAKO-AY.

Aside from the kamayo or southern Kamayo baganga also uses Cebuano,Tagalog and English.
